Assessment

Our services rely on an assessment of the person, observing what is involved in their activities of daily living and speaking to them about the impact of their injury or illness. We discuss medical, work and social history, ensuring that we thoroughly understand the effect of their injury or illness on their day-to-day life.

We gain real insight into a person’s daily needs by assessing them in the place that matters most – their home. An Occupational Therapist’s expertise lies in examining a person’s function and capacity within their own environment as separate from diagnosis.

Interface are now conducting video assessments which utilise our clinical and medicolegal experience to ensure the process of assessment produces a high standard of opinions and recommendations.

We regularly assess people involved in cases related motor vehicle accidents, personal injury, workers compensation, dust diseases, medical negligence and public liability.

Report

The report will address the questions posed in your letter of instruction and includes a comprehensive document review. Typically, a report will comment on a person’s medical history, intervention and treatment, functional tolerances, range of movement, employment history, social history, home environment and pre- and post-injury capacity for activities of daily living – including future needs.

Interface provides high quality, unbiased medico-legal reports. All reports are peer reviewed by our experienced occupational therapists and proofed by our trained quality assurance team. A standard report is available within 20 business days but can be completed sooner with prior notice.

A supplementary report can be requested when additional information becomes available or when further questions need to be addressed by the Occupational Therapist.

4. Expert Witness Service

The rigour of our assessments and reports becomes the foundation of our expert witness services in conclaves and court proceedings. Our occupational therapists are available to provide expert opinion in court or to participate in conclaves.

To arrange a conclave or court attendance, please contact our administration team.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why should I choose an occupational therapy med legal assessment and report?
    • Occupational therapists are the only discipline that assess people in their home. At an international level, occupational therapists are considered experts in assessment of domestic tasks. The primary focus of occupational therapy is occupation, which includes all activities of daily living. This skill allows occupational therapists to provide the court with an expert opinion on the level of domestic assistance a person requires following injury. Occupational Therapists explain a person’s function and capacity within their own environment as separate from diagnosis.

  • What is the difference between a domestic needs assessment, care needs assessment, activities of daily living assessment and an occupational therapy medico-legal report?
    • Nothing! Different people refer to our reports differently. Whatever you prefer to call it, we will read your letter of instructions carefully and provide a corresponding report.

  • How long will it take to receive a report?
    • Our reports typically take four weeks to complete. If you require a report earlier than this, please let us know when you book the assessment.

  • Are all assessments done in a person’s home?
    • Ideally, yes. We need to see how every aspect of a person’s life is affected by their change in circumstances. People’s homes are the epicentre of their daily routines and show us the real impact of an injury on their day-to-day lives. Having said that, we can assess elsewhere if the situation demands it.
    • Given the current public health orders, we offer a video assessment service. Our procedures for this service ensure that the person being assessed is comfortable with the technology and the process so that a seamless assessment can be conducted.

  • Do you travel for assessments?
    • Yes. We have occupational therapists based in Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sunshine Coast and New Zealand, but we can travel anywhere, and regularly do.

  • Is my information protected?
    • Interface is required by law to comply with certain specific privacy obligations including the Australian Privacy Principles contained in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (Privacy Act). We are sensitive to any concerns that you have about the confidentiality and handling of your personal and sensitive information.
